Washington wasted no time in notifying me that I was drafted. In November, I said good-bye to the people who had given me my start in broadcasting. The law required that veterans returning from service be given the jobs they held when they were drafted, but I knew I would never be returning to WHEL. There is still a radio station on the 1570 frequency in New Albany, but WHEL is no more. A later owner turned it into a gospel station, and you can’t be praising the Lord with HEL in your call letters.
While I was stationed in Seoul, President Park Chung Hee was challenged by Kim Dae Jung, a young man of Kennedy-like charisma (he even had JFK’s haircut). The election had the usual result, but Kim made a very strong showing and scared Park. S. diplomats pleaded for his life. Korean politics underwent major changes. Park was killed in 1979 and his successors were jailed. In 1998, Kim Dae Jung became the president of South Korea. Any incident involving the United States and the two Koreas was capable of renewing combat.

It was responsible for my pre-army job history and the fact that I was married. Because of Vietnam, I met Ed Bliss, got a master’s degree, and a recommendation for a good job at WTOP.
