As a compromise, the gap is filled with a foam backer strip and non-hardening elastomeric caulking on top of the foam. If a column penetrates a slab-on-grade and the foundation is close below, the gap must extend to separate the slab from the footing.

In some instances, the research or production equipment itself can create vibration. Other sources outside of a facility also must be accommodated. External vibrations include general ambient “micro-seismic” activity due to many sources, near and far. These include road and rail traffic, aircraft, industrial facilities, and construction. Vibration affects different processes in different ways. In some cases, it can cause differential motion within instruments, distorting images. In others, particularly in biological applications, it can degrade a researcher’s ability to conduct an experimental process, such as the insertion of a probe into a cell.
